our care technology for washing machines helps garments last longer
Cleaning up how we clean our clothes
Washing garments uses 20 billion cubic metres of water per year globally, enough drinking
water for 228 million people. When it comes to washing, there is a way to do it with less.
Less water, energy and chemicals.
Our Laundry Care System is a new laundry technology that uses reusable polymer spheres, which we call XOrbs,
to wash and care for textiles. Built-in during manufacture, our patented XOrbs are deployed
and harvested in the wash using an XDrum system, reducing the amount of water needed
compared to a conventional machine.
The XOrbs disrupt the traditional cleaning process by replacing harsh fabric-on-fabric
interaction with gentle mechanical action and increased wash efficacy all without any
user intervention. It’s scalable from home washes to heavy industrial use and it has already
saved millions of litres of water.
Gentle washing helps produce less clothing
Since the early 2000s clothing production has doubled and is expected to double again in
the next decade. We buy 60% more clothing than we did 15 years ago but only keep things
for half as long, with a reported 73% of textiles ending up in landfills.
Studies have found if we could extend the life of 1 in 5 garments by just 10%, an estimated
6.4 million tonnes of textiles would be diverted from landfills, potentially saving 3 million
tonnes of CO2 and 150 million litres of water every year.
Our technology cares for fabrics much more gently allowing them to be useful for longer.
